Obituary for John James Gutierrez

John James Gutierrez left this life to join God in Heaven on July 3rd, 2019. He was born on March 28, 1954, in Belen New Mexico to George Gutierrez and Clorinda Jaramillo Gutierrez. He left behind his wife, Maria, two children, Sergio Chavez, and Lisa Gutierrez as well as his grandchildren Andrew and Abriella. He is survived by his younger brother, Frank, sister-in-law, Judy, three nephews; Mark, Steven, and Anthony as well as his little buddy, Snowball

John had a career with BNSF Railroad that lasted over four decades until he retired three years ago. He had a passion for building and crafting. You could often find him in the backyard working on his latest project, his most recent ones being building a shed from the ground up, painting his trailers and organizing his garage. His father, George, worked hard to improve the things and life of his family, a trait that John inherited and passed down to his children and nephews. John encouraged seeing the bigger picture, chasing dreams and pursuing something better.

His friendly and talkative nature allowed him to build relationships and touch the lives of many people. Whether it was talking to strangers, forming friendships with his coworkers he often called partners or calling to check in on his nephews, John was always there. He was proud of being his own person and encouraged independence and resilience in his family, but would always remind them that he was there for them.

His children learned to adopt his methods of approaching situations with honesty, transparency, and logic. When he was angry, he would let you know and say how he needed some time to process the anger before speaking to you again. He taught his family that being understanding, polite and sometimes brutally honest was a good way to approach things.

His humor knew no bounds, he would make light of problematic situations and remind his family that sometimes all you could do is laugh. One of his favorite sayings was, “I’m not going to say I’m smarter than you, I’ve just been around longer.” when giving advice and sharing wisdom he collected over the years. John was an easy person to talk to, he was always supportive and encouraging. His children often told him their successes and struggles before anybody else because they knew he would listen.

John was a good man, although he has left this life he left his family with the skills to keep going. He would often tell his daughter, “I’ve lived my life and now you have to go live yours
