It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of our father, Ricardo “Ric” Navat Lastimosa on Sunday, July 17, 2022 in Apple Valley, California. Ric is preceded in death by his wife, Adelina and daughter, Tina. He is survived by his children, Lalaine and Jeff Malan, Michele and Tom Sherman, Kay and David Patzer, Glen E. Lastimosa, niece Zoraida and Tim Danieles, his grandchildren, Ryan (Zoe), Julian (Monique), Jessica, Madelyne (Joseph) and Samuel, Artemio, Jonathan and Julie, Justin (Summer) and Alex, his great-grandchildren Oliver, Reno, Sophia and Jaden, and his youngest brother Felimon N. Lastimosa of New Jersey.
Ric was born April 3, 1926 in Agno, Pangasinan, Philippines and was the third child of seven to Honorato Lastimosa and Julia Navat. He started working in a rice mill when he was 12 years old. Not wanting to be a laborer, he paid to learn how to type while in high school. With his typing skills he was able to get a job as a Clerk Typist with Brown Pacific Maxon, a contractor in Guam, where he worked until February 18, 1953 when he joined the United States Army. He completed basic training at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, then was assigned to the U.S. Army Intelligence Headquarters at Fort Holabird, Baltimore, Maryland.
He continued his service at various military installations, both stateside and abroad, to include Fort Devens MA, Fort Monmouth NJ, Camp Zama/Sagamihara Japan, Fort Riley KS, Fort Greely AK and the newly re-activated Fort Irwin CA. Ric received numerous commendations and awards throughout his military career to include the Bronze Star Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal (7), National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (3), Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant in 1976 and finished up his military career with his retirement in 1982 from the National Training Center and Fort Irwin after 29 years of service. He continued his service to the government as a Civil Servant until his retirement in 1992.
Ric enjoyed attending family gatherings and dances with his wife, and was exceptional at dancing the tango and cha-cha. He also enjoyed playing mahjong, rummy and watching sports on TV. During his last few years, he especially enjoyed spending time at the Barstow Senior Citizens’ Center going on field trips, attending dances/events and just enjoying the company of his fellow members.
Since his childhood days, Ric always strived to make a better life for himself and his family, helping his six siblings to improve their lives beyond the small barangay of Baruan, Philippines. He continued to impart this same determination and strength to his children and grandchildren with his guidance, support and words of encouragement. Ric’s smiling face, kindness, generosity and charming personality will truly be missed by many, most especially his family.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 28, 2022 from 2pm – 6pm at Highlands Funeral Home, 505 East Williams St, Barstow, CA 92311.
Mass will be held Friday, July 29, 2022 at 10am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 505 E Mountain View St, Barstow, followed by interment with full military honors at Mt. View Memorial Park, 37067 Irwin Rd, Barstow.
A reception immediately following will be held at Noonan Hall, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in remembrance of Ricardo Lastimosa can be made to the Barstow Senior Citizens’ Center on their website (www.barstowseniorcenter.com) or at 555 Melissa Ave, Barstow, CA 92311.
